About Me:

The Sergeant of Law is a Medieval Lawyer. He often is found at Paul’s walk for advice and to talk to the common man. Paul's walk for those who don't know is the middle aisle of St Paul's Cathedral in London, where people of all kinds walked up and down in search of the latest news and gossip. He was also thought of as a very wise man in his own right and was often sought after by the english nobility. But because he knew this he then demanded higher fees and was able to afford himself a much posher lifestyle Chaucer even goes far enough to say that “So greet a purchaser was nowhere noon” meaning there was no other purchaser like the Sergeant of Law. He was a very busy man but seemingly was busier and tried to make himself seem that way. Chaucer thought of him as the perfect lawyer for he spoke well, and wrote an air-tight contract, along with knowing all his cases of law by heart. He even says that he could quote every statute verbatim. Chaucer also thought it important to describe how he traveled and how he rode a horse but poorly in his medley coat.

Why we did what we did?

We choose to create a twitter for our pilgrim as our common place book . Rather than directly stating facts about the Sergeant of the Law directly in a sort of bullet point form, we decided to try and get his personality across through his own voice as a modern day teenager. One of our tweets says “tryna get that cathedral gossip #stpaulsdrama #comeatmebro” to signify the important fact about the pilgrim that inform us he could commonly be found outside St. Paul’s Cathedral with his clients, getting the updates on their affairs. Though this type of language and terminology was not of existence in the 14th century, it helps young people get an appreciation for history by relating these historical events to modern ones. The Sergeant of the Law likely would have considered himself above twitter if he had a say today, but would still perhaps think of himself as highly as we have portrayed him in our tweets.

As a group we came to the conclusion that a Prezi presentation would be the best way for us to present the sergeant and the way that the sergeant would have wanted to present his own life in a digital autobiography. Prezi for those who don’t know is an innovative online presentation program based on a blank canvas that follows a set path. A path in the prezi sets the storyline of the presentation. In our case our path not only follows the journey of the sergeant through life but also coincides with the background and follows the actual path that he and his fellow pilgrims took to Canterbury. Prezi is also a very creative and captivating place to tell a story just like the sergeant would try and do in the court or with anyone who listens to him he demands their attention. It allowed us to be creative and precise at the same time with what we want to say and we get to show that in any way we see fit due to the blank canvas and room for creativity. This was really key in our decision of making this autobiography from a prezi because not only were we able to tell the story in a clear and thoughtful way but we were able to show it in the style of what the Sergeant of Law would have presented himself and possibly even one of his court cases. All of these factors contributed to our decision as a group to use a prezi presentation as our digital autobiography for the Sergeant.
